1. Te Waikoropupū Springs (Pupu Springs)
The world-famous Pupu Springs are among the clearest in the world and one of Golden Bay’s finest treasures. This short 20-minute loop track leads through lush native bush to viewing platforms over the water. Easily accessible, the boardwalk allows the whole family to enjoy the shimmering waters.
Tip: Bring insect repellent in warmer months.
2. The Grove Scenic Reserve
Just minutes from Takaka, this short walk winds through dramatic limestone outcrops, nikau palms, and lush bush. The trail is flat and easy, leading to a small lookout with stunning views across Golden Bay’s shores.
Tip: Ideal on a hot summer’s day — the track is shady and cool.
3. Labyrinth Rocks Park
A quirky family favourite. This network of limestone passages, located just outside Takaka, feels like a natural maze. Children love exploring the twists and turns, and locals often hide small figurines for kids to find.
Tip: Bring your sense of adventure and let the kids take the lead.
4. Paynes Ford Tramline Track
This short riverside track near Takaka is flat and peaceful, winding through native bush and limestone cliffs. In summer, you can combine your walk with a swim in the river.
Tip: Pack togs and a towel if you’re visiting on a warm day.
5. Wainui Falls Track
A slightly longer option (about 1 hour return), yet very family-friendly. The track follows a small stream through lush forest, crosses a fun swing bridge, and finishes at a spectacular waterfall.

8. Kaihoka Lakes Walk
A short and easy track leads around the peaceful Kaihoka Lakes — two freshwater lakes nestled among limestone outcrops and native bush. It’s a bit of a drive from Collingwood, but the unique scenery makes it worthwhile.
Tip: There are no facilities out there, so bring snacks, water, and a picnic blanket before you leave Collingwood.
