A friendly reminder for pet owners
Please keep the following in mind when visiting:
- Effective control: While dogs can be off-leash in designated areas, the Tasman District Council requires that you keep your dog under effective control at all times. Your dog must not be a danger or nuisance to people or wildlife and must respond reliably to your commands.
- Protecting wildlife: Many of our beaches border estuaries and sensitive habitats. If there’s any chance your dog might chase or disturb birds or other wildlife, please keep them on a lead.
- Clean up: As with any public place, you are responsible for cleaning up after your dog — thank you for helping keep our beaches beautiful and safe for everyone.
1. Milnthorpe Park & Beach
Located just north of Parapara, about a 20-minute drive from Tākaka, Milnthorpe Park is a dream for dogs and their humans alike. Shaded walking tracks wind through regenerating forest before opening out to a wide sandy beach where dogs can run free and splash in the shallows.
This is one of the few beaches in Golden Bay where dogs are welcome all year round. It’s peaceful, scenic, and ideal for letting your pup explore off-lead while you take in the views across the bay.
Tip: The park’s main car park is just off Highway 60 — bring a towel, because chances are your dog will end up soaked and happy.
2. Collingwood Beaches
Collingwood Beach is a controlled exercise area all year round, so dogs are free to run under effective control. Just avoid the inlet and Aorere River mouth, where wildlife feed and nest.
Tip: Grab a coffee or ice cream from town and wander down to the sand — it’s an easy, relaxing outing for you and your furry friend.
3. Patons Rock Beach
Peaceful and uncrowded, Patons Rock is one of those beaches that feels like a local secret. It’s ideal for strolls, swimming, and long games of fetch across the sand.
The beach is a year-round controlled exercise area, meaning dogs are welcome any time as long as they’re under control. There’s a small car park and toilet near the beach access at the end of Patons Rock Road.
Tip: Plan your visit for low tide — the sand stretches out beautifully for endless walkies.
4. Rangihaeata Beach
Just a short drive from Tākaka, Rangihaeata Beach offers wide open flats, gentle waves, and stunning views across the bay. It’s a quiet spot where locals love to let their dogs roam.
Rangihaeata is a controlled exercise area all year round, so your dog can run freely when under control. The beach’s shallow water and calm atmosphere make it perfect for both energetic dogs and those who prefer a slower pace.
5. Ligar Bay Beach
Tucked between Pohara and Tata, Ligar Bay is one of the warmest and most inviting beaches in Golden Bay. Its golden sand, gentle waves, and relaxed feel make it a favourite for families and their dogs.
Ligar Bay is a controlled exercise area all year round, meaning dogs can enjoy the beach freely when under control. Public toilets are available near the central access point.
Tip: Check out the rope swings on the eastern side of the beach — they’re a local treasure and make for a fun stop while your dog plays nearby.
6. Pakawau Beach
At the far northern end of Golden Bay, Pakawau Beach stretches for miles — wide, peaceful, and perfect for long walks beside the sea. It’s one of the most relaxed dog-friendly spots in the region.
From Tomatea Reserve to one kilometre south of Pakawau Beach Campground, the beach is a controlled exercise area all year round. Dogs can roam off-lead when under control but should be kept clear of nesting birds in the dunes and estuary.
Tip: Visit at low tide for endless sand to explore — your dog will love the freedom and space.
Dog-friendly cafés & places to eat
After all that exploring, both you and your pup will deserve a treat. Many local cafés offer outdoor seating and a warm welcome for dogs:
- The Wholemeal Café (Tākaka) — dog-friendly courtyard with shade and water bowls.
- Molly B’s Café (Pohara) — friendly service and a sunny outdoor area where dogs are always welcome.
- Mussel Inn (Onekaka) — famous for its relaxed garden setting, local brews, and four-legged visitors.
- Courthouse Café (Collingwood) — sunny deck, great coffee, and staff who love dogs.
